The Law & Economics Letter

About Law and Economics

Blue Book: The standard manual for how to refer to statutes, cases and other materials when citing them in the course of legal writing. It has been adopted by all court systems in the United States, and by all U.S. law journals except those affiliated with the University of Chicago–and The Law and Economics Letter.

Maroon Book: The citation manual used by law journals at the University of Chicago, and by The Law and Economics Letter. Its citation guidelines generally follow the Blue Book’s, with two exceptions arising from the culture at Chicago and well-suited to the study of Law and Economics. In a drive for efficiency, the Maroon Book dispenses with almost all periods in legal citations, and it is more flexible in dealing with the non-legal secondary sources that are so popular among University of Chicago interdisciplinarians.
